Each day the news brings more unprecedented closures including our schools. How can you help your student stay on track, or maybe even gain ground during this time?
Fortunately, many students are already familiar with some form of online learning. The challenge is to help them stick to a schedule. We all do it. We get an unexpected snow or hurricane day and all we want to do is relax and enjoy. This closure is different. It isn’t a day to two. So far in Florida we are looking at two weeks and there is a very real possibility that it may be longer than that.
It is critical that your student continue as though he or she was still attending school. Set up a work area and time expectations. Be specific! Don’t just say, “Go do your schoolwork.” Help them set expectations for how long assignments will take and prepare a schedule from there. I find it helpful to set time blocks rather than task completion. For example:

So far in this series of posts we have talked about the why, the when and the where of studying. Now we are going to talk about the how; how to actually implement the plan. First of all, a plan is no good if you don’t use it. We have already talked about the fact that habits are easy and discipline is hard, so the first step it to be habitual. Find a time and a location that work for your student and encourage them to form good study habits!
Exactly how are you supposed to help your student build good habits. First, it is important to realize that nobody gets up in the morning and says, “Today I am going to have a crummy day.” If your student is not doing their best, there is a reason. Find it! Here are some common roadblocks.
They are having trouble understanding the material.
Nobody likes to do things that they aren’t good at. If your student is putting the time in, but isn’t seeing any results, they are going to be less willing to spend...
Location, Location, Location
So far in this series, we have talked about why you need to review and how to fit that review into your schedule. This post talks about the setting for your study time. We all know that certain settings encourage certain behaviors. When you walk into an auditorium during a performance, you try to enter quietly and not interrupt the event. When you walk into a party, you greet the others there and join in the fun. You don’t play baseball at the dinner table. Okay, that last one was a little extreme, but I had three boys and yes, it can happen. The point is make an intentional decision about where you study.
When you have a specific place that you use each time you study, your brain knows when you go there that you are ready to work. If you study sitting on your bed, your brain is confused. Are we getting ready to sleep or is this Shakespeare that I am reading important? There is a lot of material that you learn in school that requires...
In my last post, I talked about the need to review previously learned material in order to retain it. I am quite certain many of you thought, “Exactly WHEN am I supposed to do that?” when you read it. I understand! Student’s schedules are beyond full! They have school 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Many have extra curricular activities such as sports, dance, band, music lessons and/or clubs. They already have assigned homework that can take anywhere from an hour to three hours depending on the course load and the teachers. There is also the little matter of eating, sleeping and maybe, just maybe, having some time for fun! So exactly how are you supposed to add in EXTRA review.
The most important piece of studying efficiently, both assigned and review, is consistency. As the title of this post points out, Habits are Easy! There are lots of things you do by habit and you don’t even think about.
